IBPS Exam Pattern: Preliminary

The IBPS clerk preliminary exams will be held online which will test the candidate on the basis of merits like aptitude, English, and intellect. For one to qualify to the mains round, it is important to clear the cutoff of each and every section. There are a total of three sections. The total time allotted for the preliminary exam is 1 hour. The cumulative marks that the question paper will comprise of are 100.  The passing marks are decided by IBPS and are likely to change every year depending on the difficulty level of the question paper.

IBPS Exam Pattern: Mains

There have been certain changes presently that are noticed in the Exam Pattern of the Clerk exam of IBPS. There have been revisions that have occurred in the total time duration and a total number of questions.

In the updates that have been circulated recently, the total number of questions in the exam will be 190 and the entire questions are to be solved within a time span of 160 minutes.

In the previous times, the computer aptitude section and the reasoning ability section were conducted separately. But this time, an amalgamation will take place and both the aptitude section and the reasoning ability section will be consist of a total of 20 questions that will be needed to complete in a total of 45 minutes. The preliminary and the mains exam will be conducted in more than one language which is Hindi and English. The exam pattern is as follows

In the preliminary as well as the mains exam, there will be a penalty charged for every wrong answer. The penalty for one wrong question will extract a total of one-fourth of the total marks that is assigned to the question. If a question is left blank or is unanswered, there will be no penalty for such questions.

Final Score

To grade up the Mains examination, it is important to score well in the preliminary exams which is nothing but just a tool. For the final marks that are required for the position of the clerk, the marks of the mains examination will be taken into consideration only. Hence, the candidates that makeup to the merit list will qualify for the position of IBPS clerk.


The syllabus of the IBPS clerk 2017 matches to every other syllabus and there is hardly a difference. The major portions that need full command of the applicants include:

  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Reasoning

The three sections will be further divided into subsections and subheadings. To know the weight of sub-topics, candidates can check the previous year questions anytime.

As we already know that the two exams that will be held in the process are Preliminary and Mains Exam.

The common sections in both the exam include the English language, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning. The two different topics that the Mains exam will only include are Computer aptitude and General Awareness.
